Designs for the "X-Plane" flight simulator
by Mike James

Tested in "X-Plane" version 8.20

The last original design radio-controlled model I worked on was the J-47 "Eliminator 2" jet. The physical model in the article was pusher prop-powered. The X-Plane version is a jet.

For the "X-Plane" model, I chose to scale the aircraft up to "actual size". This gives better and more realistic performance in the simulator. As far as thrust, weight, areas, etc., it roughly equates to modern fighters like the F/A-22. What is different about it is that it is dynamically stable, without the need for any "auto stability" functions. Using my experience with actual flying models made this a lot easier. Here are some examples of the plane's outstanding performance.

The "X-Plane" paint, on the other hand, (unlike the nice CAD image below) isn't especially great. If some of you improve it, I would love to see your results. Regardless, it's a fun, highly-maneuverable stable plane to fly, so have enjoy!
